โ Frequently Asked Questions
Traditionally, you tip on the pre-tax amount. But tipping on the total (post-tax) is becoming more common and is perfectly acceptable. The difference is usually small.
In the US, tipping is customary and expected as servers often rely on tips. Some restaurants include automatic gratuity for large parties (usually 18-20%). Check your bill!
Takeout tipping is debated. 10-15% is generous. During busy times or for large/complex orders, tipping more is appreciated. Many people round up or tip $2-5.
Tipping culture varies greatly. In Japan, it can be offensive. In Europe, 5-10% or rounding up is common. Research local customs before traveling!
